When you go to church, take a good look around you. You could be sitting next to an adulterer, an adulteress, a fornicator, a homosexual or sodomite, a lesbian, a bisexual, a transgender person. You could be sitting next to a person that watched porn and masturbated last night and came to church. On the outside, it looks like they are all right. But deep inside a struggle ensues. The battle rages within their minds and bodies.
Walking sexual time bombs. The chain gang of sexual bondage.
The church is to be a place where sinners come to be saved. Where sin is abandoned for freedom in Christ. Where sinners come to receive the power of God and be saved from a life of sin. The church is supposed to be a place where people come to get help.
That’s what the church is supposed to be about.
It doesn’t help when people are turned away because of a lack of sensitivity to their situation. On the other hand, sensitivity must never come with permission to remain in sin. The compassion of the Lord works to help people be free from sin, not to continue in sin as if God approved.
Watching people turn their lives over to the Lord is what the church is supposed to be about. To never let sin dominate them.
Sadly, in many of our churches today, many are walking into the church, they sing in our choirs, play instruments, preach, and assume other leadership roles while practicing sin.
Coming in and leaving the same way they came.
I find that to be in church requires that something in me changes to reflect that I am truly born again, that I would never be the same. We are finding that people come in and leave the same way.
Still bound in sin instead of gaining freedom and victory over their darkest secrets.
Perhaps they want to use the church to justify their sin.
More often, we are finding that people that come to church are not seeking to justify sin. We are finding that people are not just using church activity to give them a sense of God’s acceptance. It’s like taking a bath after you’ve sinned a sexual sin, looking for cleansing. Or you go into a cleansing fit, cleaning up the house.
We go to church to have a “cleansing fit.”
But we really never learn to overcome.
Hence, Paul’s statement in Ephesians 4:20,
“You have not so learned Christ.”
I know what this is like from the time of my grossly habitual hypocrisy in self gratification, commonly called masturbation and porn. You’ve sinned against the Lord and against your own body, and your conscience lets you know about it. The Holy Spirit within you is grieved or saddened.
Many days that after I’ve sexually gratified myself, that I felt hopeless. Wondering if I would ever be free. In many people that live in sexual bondage, the LGBT argument resounds. And even I, in what was my bondage, said the same thing.
” I am bound to this and it will never stop. So stop denying who you are sexually and accept it. It’s the way you were created by God, so give yourself to it. You know you need this. Stop trying to stop who you are and accept it. You will never change, just accept it!”
You look every where to get cleansed.
Cleaning something in the house.
Anything to escape the guilt that follows after sin is committed.
We even invoke 1 John 1:9.
Many of us have wore that verse of Scripture out. The blessing about that verse is that it cannot be wore out. It could be abused to appease the guilty feeling on the inside but that is remorse.
The difference with remorse is that you are only sorry that you got caught and that you are trying everything possible to reduce the shame associated with the guilt of sin.
That’s why repentance commands us to turn, not keep turning from sin and then return to sin again. That’s revolving door appeasement. I used to call it revolving door repentance but true repentance understands how to turn away forever from the very thing Jesus died for.
True repentance is establishing one fact.
That one turns from sin because God was offended and that you do not ever want to hurt God again.
This is where many believers caught in Secret Sexual Sins are.
The urges and impulses of our flesh and mind gets the best of us when we are not meditating on the Word day and night. As soon as we are exposed to something by the Internet, the newspaper, the activities on the street, our minds shifts from righteousness to unrighteousness.
Almost like clockwork, at the flip of a switch, we aggressively pursue sexual satisfaction.
Have you ever been to the place where you were thinking about the Lord and His Word. All of a sudden your are provoked by sexuality in women. I don’t know what SSA is in experience. But the struggle with SSA (same sex attraction) in men and with women in the church is there.
If you are not disciplined, you do what you have to do to answer the sexual satisfaction call of the flesh and the mind.
You “got off” and all of a sudden, as you are sitting on the edge of your bed, you cry tears of bondage. You’ve sinned again after you promised the Lord that you would never let Him down again.
You are plunged into utter despair, helplessness, and hopelessness.
So we see churches struggling to address the issue of sex, homosexuality, and bisexuality.
Sex is supposed to be a beautify act of physically love between one man and one woman in holy matrimony according to the precedent set by the Lord God in Genesis 2:24. A beautiful thing has been perverted and the depravity of men is now the new pursuit of the 21st Century.
This is not a psychological or mental situation.
Sin is a spiritual issue that requires a spiritual remedy.
Anytime a person tells you that there is more to it than sin being a spiritual issue, they must remember that sin is the cause of all things that happened badly in the world. The fall of Adam triggered a massive defection away from God.
Sin is responsible for death. Death is separation from life. So when we sin against God, we are cutting ourself off from God (see James 1:12-15).
Therefore, to assume any another explanation is avoiding the issue.
Listen to what Paul said in Ephesians 4:17-19,
“This I say, therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you should no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind, having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart; who, being past feeling, have given themselves over to lewdness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.”
Notice what Paul said, “given themselves over to lewdness…”
To give yourself over to something is a direct defection from discipline. In other words, you lose self control and you do everything in your power to achieve an objective.
Look at the word “over.”
When you give yourselves “over,” this is the Greek word “paradidomi,” and it means “to surrender, or yield up.”
And this is what every person that is struggling with Secret Sexual Sins face every moment of the day.
The struggle to keep yourself from sinning sexually, to give yourself over to “aselgeia.”
That’s the Greek word used to describe “unbridled lust, excess, outrageousness, lasciviousness, wantonness, shamelessness, insolence.”
You are coming to church to get it right but you haven’t found a way. You return the way you came.
Is there a way of escape? Is God going to help me? Will I ever find peace and satisfaction that God promised? Or am I forever lost to my urges and impulses?
The answer, when LGBT, Sodomites, Adulterers, Fornicators, And Bisexuals In Church; Getting Help (Part Two) comes.
