The saying goes that a city is defined by its people and their activities.
For years, many of us have used the terms “Sodom & Gomorrah” or just “Sodom” to define the wicked activities committed by people of the same sex.
The Lord made an emphatic statement that He is against such practices when 4 of the 5 cities were destroyed by two angels, using fire and brimstone from heaven.
Just before we get to the definitions of these words ”Sodom and Gomorrah,” there’s no question about various definitions used by many Greek and Hebrew scholars. I’m quite sure that I’m not the only one to come across these definitions. Some of you may have seen these definitions before.
The homosexual community will do everything to discount this information, by using scholars that disagree with any of these definitions. They will also disagree with numerous concurring scholars, archeological findings through excavations, and Table Of Element facts.
All in an effort to discount the destruction by the Lord of these ancient cities.
If these cities didn’t exist, then why were these cities destroyed and why is there overwhelming evidence of their existence?
There would be etymological refutation and serious lack of archeological evidence to significantly discount the occurrence of this tragic event.
Now these were the cities recorded in Genesis and Deuteronomy that were involved with the Lord’s displeasure.
Genesis 10:19 (NKJV Strong’s) “And the border of the Canaanites was from Sidon as you go toward Gerar, as far as Gaza; then as you go toward Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, as far as Lasha.”
The Lord overthrew four of the five cities as recorded in Deuteronomy 29:23 (NKJV Strong’s)
‘The whole land is brimstone, salt, and burning; it is not sown, nor does it bear, nor does any grass grow there, like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, which the Lord overthrew in His anger and His wrath.’
The excavations and other archeological findings have confirmed that a major catastrophic event took place.
I dare say that too often, televangelists speculate a bit beyond Biblical foundation to say that the fire and brimstone that rained on these 4 cities was the result of a volcanic eruption. While it’s quite conceivable, the events still happened.
In one documentary that refutes a volcanic eruption, the Table Of Elements is our iron clad guide to chemicals found in the earth. In this documentary, they’ve claimed to discovered that the elements of fire and brimstone were present but these elements were not a part of the Table of Elements.
Here’s another element of proof that is found in the Bible without scientific discoveries.
Many of you will remember when Isaiah saw the Lord sitting on His throne. An angel took from the altar in heaven with tongs, a coal that was placed on the lips of Isaiah to cleanse him from his sin.
So, if the coal of fire came from heaven and was used to cleanse the lips of Isaiah, there’s no doubt that there’s fire in heaven.
We’re also privy to the fact that in Matthew 25, the Lord Jesus said that hell was prepared for the devil and his angels. It’s conceivable that fire and brimstone, the very elements that people will be cast into after the Great White Throne Judgment, may have been used.
We can’t discount the fact that underneath the earth, lakes of lava is the closest thing to observing what sinners will be cast into.
Now when you look at the word “Sodom,” in the Hebrew as well as the Greek, it means “burning.”
It’s no wonder that God judged the men and possibly women performing same sex sins were burning with passion and lust towards one another of the same sex.
This is confirmed in Romans 1:26-27 (NKJV Strong’s). “For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due.”
So to be judged by the Lord with burning fire is no coincidence.
In one excavation of the Dead Sea, the city of Sodom is under water. From satellite images, they were able to confirm the possible location of the city of Sodom. According to scholars and those involved in excavation, they’ve determined that the city of Sodom was on the southern part of Sodom, but other scholars disagree of its certainty.
Nonetheless, these cities existed.
In this same documentary, they’ve claimed to have discovered bones in caves dating back to OT times with burning residue on these bones.
I’m trying to be very careful because documentaries these days can make anything filled with truth and then later to be discovered that it wasn’t the case.
With the definition of Gomorrah, so many of us have placed considerable emphasis on Sodom that we forget that there’s other cities involved. We’ve dealt with Sodom, now let’s deal with Gomorrah.
Gomorrah was also located south of the Dead Sea but according to Strong’s Definition of OT & NT Words, it means “submersion.” Hidden. Also “a ruined heap.”
We also have to share that the Dead Sea is the lowest body of water. Meaning that the surface of the Dead Sea is below sea level across the globe.
We all know what the phrase “in the closet” is about.
To submerse is to keep it a secret or below the surface, or “plunge below.”
Now when it comes to the closet, usually it’s associated with shame, embarrassment, and it usually drives people into a sense of hopelessness.
But people have learned how to suppress hopelessness and abandonment to continue in the sin they love. It’s clear, then, that as long as what they do remains in the dark and their identity is secure, no harm no foul.
But it’s also clear, in recent times, that the activities of the vile is all out for everyone to see. And most people know who they are.
However, the feeling of shame still keep a lot of people from coming out.
But the shame is a result of conviction in the conscience or heart of man that the act committed violated the natural moral law of God.
Even when you disregard the Word of God, your heart convicts you of sin because God created within man everything necessary to understand the difference between right and wrong.
The feeling of knowing that what is done in the dark is still a shame, drives many people to commit suicide.
Thousands take their lives because of the shame and they try to lay blame on the Bible and true believer for reaching out to them to command them to repent of this wickedness. True believers should never shame others because the shame, resulting from conviction, is there anyway. True believers must speak the truth in love without using tools of the world to make people change.
We must remember that we can’t change any one. Only the God of creation can change the heart of the wicked. We who have been born again, changed by the power of God, are given the ministry of reconciliation. Just as Paul shared in 2 Corinthians 5, we beseech people to be reconciled to God.
Now the results of these acts are all out for the world to see.
This is where after despising the warnings to stop before it’s too late, take hold.
So this secondary city called Gomorrah is pretty much a name of association to Sodom, but it’s also an uncovering, since no one want to hide in the closet any more.
The days of submersion are over.
We’re now living in the day where what’s practiced in the dark, is out for all to see.
