Men and women are struggling with porn and masturbation every day. Depending upon the frequency, some are drowning in the pool of the flesh and mind. Like a switch, whenever the mind thinks about sex, the body goes into making “…provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.” as you “…present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin.”
You are completely committed to satisfying the desires of your flesh and mind. The resumption of the quest to satisfy yourself overwhelms you, or more truthfully, you give yourself over to its lusts to control you.
You have seemingly repented (remorseful) in an flippant attempt to overcome that moment of transgression and the cycle or process to release sexual tension renews itself.
For you and millions of men and women, it’s just a matter of moments after orgasm that the desires of the flesh and mind recycles. Then it’s back to business as usual. The remorse is short lived. The “repentance” didn’t stick and hopelessness, over time, sets in.
The disciplining of the flesh and the mind is key to overcoming the sins of the flesh.
You have yet to learn how to establish limits, boundaries, and prohibited zones, and stick to it every time, every day, every moment.
The devil is not going to rest. The devil is not going to stop.
His sole purpose is to engulf your flesh and mind with evil passions, that when acted upon, you are tricked into believing that you will never break free. Or you love the sin of porn and masturbation that delusion and deception suppresses the truth in unrighteousness.
In either case, should you refuse to break free, the result is to take you to the pit of hell if your repentance isn’t for real (see Galatians 6:7-8 and Revelation 21:8).
Some of you already know that the Lord God destroyed the power of darkness when sin was placed on Jesus when He died on the cross. Sin has no dominion over Jesus because after sin was placed on Jesus, Jesus died. Just as Paul said in Romans 6, “sin has no more dominion over Him.”
Again, Paul reiterated that because we are in Christ, sin does not have dominion over us, therefore, we are not to allow ourselves to remain under the power of sin when sin’s power has been destroyed.
So how do you break free?
Jesus did the work (see John 8:36 and 2 Corinthians 5:21), but now you have to obey the Word of God on a regular basis to make the freedom from porn and masturbation stick.
When you are driving a vehicle, the stop signs and stop lights must be obeyed every time. We do not have a problem complying with stop signs and red lights.
It’s the same with the Word of God. To stay righteous, we must stop sinning.
How is this accomplished?
1. Daily prayer and study of the Word, and immediate application of the Word of God.
One of the main reasons why men and women fail to maintain their freedom is that they either refuse to establish a time to be before God (not just on Sundays). Or they do not have a set time of prayer, fasting, and the reading towards application of the Word of God. Another reason is that they refuse or deliberately disobey the Holy Spirit when He provides a way of escape according to 1 Corinthians 10:13.
Proverbs 4:23 says “Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.”
There must be a deliberate action of prayer and the application of the Word of God if you are going to keep yourself from falling into sin.
It’s called obedience.
OBEDIENCE TO PRAY
Psalm 27:8 says “When You said, “Seek My face,” My heart said to You, “Your face, Lord, I will seek.”
OBEDIENCE TO APPLY THE WORD
Psalm 119:9-11 says “How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word. With my whole heart I have sought You; Oh, let me not wander from Your commandments! Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You.”
James 1: 22 says “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.“
2. The willingness to walk away from the pleasure of porn and masturbation.
The course called “Way To Purity” by Mike Cleveland of Setting Captives Free is the bench mark for helping men and women break free. While there are other courses that are available on the Internet to help a person break free from the cycle of porn and masturbation, this course works on the heart and helps establishes the discipline a man or a woman needs.
The love for the Lord must completely destroy the love for porn and masturbation.
If godly sorrow that works repentance is not working in you, your love for porn and masturbation is greater.
Two Scriptures come to mind.
Exodus 20:3-5 “You shall have no other gods before Me. “You shall not make for yourself a carved image —any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God,”
And Matthew 6:21 “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
When you treasure porn and masturbation more than the Lord, you have erected a god, and you are bowing down to serve them, thus, making God a Jealous God. You are treasuring porn and masturbation and that’s where your heart is.
A few years ago, I took this course and completed it. It’s 60 days of lessons to re-establish sexual sobriety and deepening my relationship with the Lord. I will know how serious a person is when they take this course. An accountability partner is assigned to you. At the end of each lesson, a question is posed whether or not you’ve seen porn and masturbated.
The most difficult thing for a man or a woman to do is to stop masturbating.
The porn wasn’t that much of a problem because after the Lord showed my, by way of Pastor Roger Jamison, pastor of Sword of the Spirit Tabernacle in Brooklyn NY, which sites to go on to understand what is driving the porn industry. After gleaning from the information, I was able to comprehend what was behind porn. Obviously, the devil is behind pornography, but the inner workings of what is connected needed to be understood.
It would be November 2008 when I last observed porn and masturbated to pornography. On that day, the Lord said to me, “Is this what you do to Me after all the good I’ve done for you?”
That Word from God is what did it. The power of God in that Word helped me to break free of porn.
However, it was masturbation that would be the most difficult thing to break free from. I wasn’t ready to give it up because of the self imposed pleasure associated with masturbation.
The seemingly endless pleasure of being able to masturbate became the one bondage that always gave the false pleasure that you were having sex with that image; coupled with self pleasure. It was a bondage that needed to be broken.
With Setting Captives Free, the challenge to be honest with my answers and to report that I never watched porn or masturbated instilled within me the discipline to be holy before God.
When you have reached a point in your life that you want to be free, one of the first things that happens is that there is emotional excitement that you have finally broken free. It lasts a short time because the old habits of looking lustfully at women or men creeps back into your life. The glance turns into a stare, The stare turns into having sex in your mind with that person. The sex in the mind turns into acting out your lusts in masturbation.
To stop this habit, you have to be willing to cut off the access points to your heart of things that will trigger lust in your heart.
Two Scriptures come to mind.
Psalm 101:3 says “I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes…”
Matthew 6:22-23 says “The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!”
What you see and the intent of what you see determines whether your heart is full of light or full of darkness.
When you do not mind looking at certain shows that deliberately display depravity, it is a clear indication that you are giving yourself to wickedness. The devil takes a page out of God’s Word…..“The sower sows the word…”
Television (has a vision) shows are like seeds being sown in the heart. All it takes is for a little water, and then the seed grows.
